I wrote this poem for M. Ward, who wrote the song "Chinese Translation" and posed the question, "What do you do with the pieces of a broken heart?"
Turn each piece over
in your hand:
this glass
tossed
spit
from the ocean,
red
dripping
beating
one
two:
count
slowly
backwards
from death.
